A Guide Building a Brand with Video Promoton

June 30th, 2009 in Entrepreneurship

One of my close friends is an aspiring rapper and though he only does it recreationally, he wanted an outlet in which he could expose his work to the masses and hopefully build up a strong fan base in the process. He makes quality songs, he just didn’t have the means nor the time to market them to an audience beyond his personal network.

I told him to spend more time marketing his content online, especially on YouTube. So we made a remix to the hit song “I Love College” by Asher Roth and uploaded it to the website.

It has been about four months and the video has been viewed over 450,000 times and commented on nearly 600 times. It has been featured on Maxim, and is the largest “I Love College” remix on YouTube beating out remixes with Jim Jones and Ludacris.

I recently made a guest post on Jeremy Schoemaker’s blog , Shoemoney.com, talking about how we did it. For those of you who don’t know, Jeremy is one of the leaders in the online marketing world. His websites generate hundreds of thousands of dollars a month in revenue and he shares his tips on his blog. It is one of the blogs I read every day and highly recommend.

Here is an excerpt from the post as well as the video we created.

One of the easiest ways to spread a video at first is to leverage social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace. Seeing how most of our Facebook friends were college students, it was fairly easy to post links to the video on our friend’s profiles and have them spread around quickly through our personal network. You can also set up a page for yourself on Facebook and invite as many people to join as possible. (Invite all your friends and ask your close friends and family to invite all their friends)

Interesting post.

I never thought of doing this for a blog. I understand how you can use youtube to promote a rapper and a business, but how do you use it to advertise your blog?

I have read a lot of posts that say putting videos on your website are really good for SEO. For the type of website I have it is very hard to put videos up.

We are eventually going to have chat rooms, would this have the same effect as a video? If not, how do you reccomend implementing a video in to a website such as http://www.emergingtiro.com.
