Would you buy a pizza from a vending machine? Italian entrepreneur Claudio Torghele is banking on it. Torghele made a small fortune selling pasta in California has created Let’s Pizza, a vending machine which can bake and serve a fresh pizza in less then 3 minutes.

The machine is part of a rebirth of automats, food establishments relying solely on vending machines such as Let’s Pizza. Torghele’s creations will be placed a Brekky, a franchise chain based out of Milan selling both cold and warm dishes all out of vending machines.

According to a New York Times article on the invention. “The European vending machine industry, which has grown significantly and now has annual sales of about 26 billion euros, or $33 billion.”

In this worldwide recession, automats provide a more affordable way for people to eat out with the Let’s Pizza machine selling 12 inch pizzas for as little as $4.50. However, one major challenge that the firm will face is getting estbalishments to buy the machines which cost around $32,000, compared to $2600 for the average vending machine.

Interesting idea. I was just in Europe where I saw numerous automats with food that looked not even close to as good as these pizzas. However I didn’t see many people buying them.

There are so many pizza places all over America I don’t think this idea will work, especially with the 32,000 dollar upfront cost. It’s still good to see a businessman trying to be entrepreneurial during these times.
