You Can’t Do it Yourself: Freelance Employees

June 6th, 2009 in Entrepreneurship
Freelance Employees

There comes a point in every business (hopefully) where you realize you just can’t do it all yourself. You need help if your business is going to continue to grow. Often times this mean hiring employees; but hiring part-time or even full-time employees can be a risky time and capital intensive process. Therefore I would like to offer a more flexible and frankly easier approach: hiring freelance employees.

Freelance employees are entrepreneurs who offer their services, whether it be graphic design services, content writing, accounting, etc. to a number of clients. They can be hired and paid on a per-project basis allowing you to only pay for their services when you need them.

For many start-up companies, specialization is not a luxury that can be afforded. Hiring a full-time designer, copywriter, accountant, etc. is in often cases just not feasible when bootstrapping. Freelance employees are the perfect solution to this problem. When you need a project completed, simply look for an individual offering the service you are looking for and hire them on a per-project basis.

In order to get started, check out Craigslist, professional online forums such as Digital Point, or just do a Google search.

Another resource that I have used on occasion is http://www.odesk.com/. I can post a job on oDesk and have other contractors bid on my project.

It’s a hard decision but hiring freelance employee is really growing someone else’s business and not yours. So if you want to grow you need employees. Freelance is really the quick fix which I must admit you sometimes need.
